Big Sam’s Funky Nation with special guest King Soul

FRI MAY 10 / 8:30PM

Hailing from New Orleans, the former trombone player of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and a founding member of the Stooges Brass Band, Big Sam Williams always entertains audiences with his exhilarating call-and-response MC-style and brand of high-voltage funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop, termed “Noladelic Powerfunk.” The San Francisco Chronicle calls Big Sam “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.”  Big Sam’s Funky Nation will be joined by special guest local Southern soul band King Soul. Big Sam began playing with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band at 19 before striking out on his own and creating Big Sam’s Funky Nation. He powered-up the horn section with Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint on the critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated River in Reverse and has played with James Brown, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Dave Matthews, Ozomatli and Widespread Panic. He also shared the stage with U2 and Green Day for the emotional and energetic re-opening of the New Orleans Superdome which was broadcast live on Monday Night Football.
