In two recent series of photographs -- one taken during the day, the other at night -- Everitt Clark has uncovered the beauty of northern Virginia’s suburban landscape. The daytime images depict the ornery persistence of the natural world in the suburbs, while the nighttime works reveal the uncanny contrasts that lurk in our own backyards when the sun goes down. The photographs are black-and-white silver gelatin contact prints pulled by hand from 4”x5” negatives, a labor-intensive process which produces images of unsurpassed tonal density and razor-sharp detail. They reveal the unexpected grandeur of an abandoned gas station, the scraps of plastic caught in a tree, and the lamps on a lonely street at dusk.
